Search Volume Is Lying to You. Here's What to Measure Instead
Big keywords look impressive in a spreadsheet and often earn nothing. Pick targets by what they are worth.
Every keyword tool puts search volume in the first column, so it becomes the number everyone argues about. It is the least useful number on the page.
Key answer
Search volume measures how often a phrase is typed, not how much revenue it brings. Choose targets by intent, conversion likelihood and what you can realistically win, then judge them by leads and revenue rather than traffic.
Why Is Search Volume Misleading?
Search volume is misleading because it treats a student's research query and a buyer's purchase query as equal. A phrase with 10,000 monthly searches can produce no customers, while one with 90 can fill your calendar.
What Should You Measure Instead?
Measure intent, winnability and value. Together they tell you whether a keyword is worth a page, a campaign or nothing at all.
- Intent: is the searcher buying, comparing or learning?
- Winnability: who ranks now, and can you realistically beat them this year?
- Value: what is a customer from this search worth to you?
- Evidence: have paid ads already shown this search converts?
If you run PPC, your search terms report is the best keyword research you own. It shows which phrases actually turned into enquiries.

How Do You Report Success Without Traffic Targets?
Report success by leads and revenue per page or campaign, with traffic as supporting context. A monthly table showing each target page, its enquiries and the revenue they produced keeps everyone focused on the number that matters.
